In a way, ductwork is to your HVAC system as your circulatory system is to your body. If your ducts are faulty, then your heating and cooling system will not be nearly as efficient; just as if your blood doesn’t flow properly, your body will suffer. Not only will your HVAC system lose efficiency, you’ll also experience inconsistent cooling and heating inside your home. Since ductwork is largely hidden from sight, if there’s a problem you may not even know it. So how will you know whether or not it’s time to get new ductwork? Here’s how to find out.
- Determine how old your ducts are – If your ducts were originally installed when your home was first built, there’s a very good chance it was done for the lowest possible cost. As a result, the materials more than likely were not intended to last for the life of the home. In fact, in as little as 10 years after construction the joints, seals and seams may have deteriorated a great deal.
- Inspect the ductwork where you can – You should be able to get into your attic or crawl spaces and see parts of exposed ductwork. Look at the joints to see if they have deteriorated – they may have been sealed with duct tape when originally installed. Look for any dust that may be coming from the seams, as well as signs of corrosion or rust. If you see any of that, then you’ll probably be better off with new ductwork.
- Check your rooms’ airflow – If you have a reduced amount of airflow in some rooms when compared to others, that may mean the ducts serving those rooms have either collapsed or become disconnected.
- Call Global Efficient Energy to have a blower door test performed – This is the best way of testing the status of your ducts. A blower door test uses a blower fan to pressurize ducts, as well as an airflow sensor and pressure sensors. Once the ductwork is pressurized to a certain level, a computer will calculate the amount of airflow that is required to maintain pressure. The computer will then calculate the amount of air leakage that is taking place.
