More than likely you’ve heard about light emitting diode (LED) lighting versus traditional types of lighting. There are several reasons why there is such a push toward having LED lighting in all U.S. homes. It is not only extremely friendly to the environment, it is also extremely energy efficient. While there are many, many benefits to LED, here are five of the most important.

1. Lifespan

LED lights can last up to 100,000 hours – that’s equivalent to keeping a light on 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 11 straight years. In most cases, if you left this type of light on eight hours a day you wouldn’t have to replace it for an astounding 20 years.

2. Efficiency

This type of lighting has an efficiency rating of 80-90 percent compared to conventional bulbs. What this means is that up to 90 percent of the energy used by an LED light is converted directly to light, with 10-20 percent being lost to heat and other types of energy. On the other hand, traditional incandescent bulbs are only 20 percent efficient.

That translates into cost savings. Let’s say for simplicity’s sake that you spend an average of $100 a month on lighting. If you use only incandescent bulbs (which are only 20 percent efficient) in your home, $80 of that is going toward something other than providing light. If you used LED lights (80 percent efficient), however, you’d only be spending $20 a month on lighting.

3. Environmentally Friendly

Unlike their incandescent counterparts, LED lights are completely free of toxic chemicals. They don’t have mercury and other dangerous materials, and they’re also 100 percent recyclable. One LED bulb can take the place of 25 traditional ones.

4. Higher Quality

LED bulbs are much more durable, resistant to vibrations, shock and other types of impacts. Their ability to withstand tough weather conditions makes them perfect to use for outdoor lighting.

5. Flexibility of Design

You can use LED lighting in nearly any shape and it will provide extremely efficient illumination. It can be used to achieve a wide variety of lighting effects.
