The future of solar may just be in interior decorative solar panels (OPV, organic photovoltaics) that could be placed on walls, window sills or even billboards. VTT Technical Center in Finland is currently developing and producing these designer solar panels for a range of interior and exterior applications. What’s really cool are the patterns and shapes that are now achievable. OPV’s were formally only available in the form of stripes, whereas now they come in all kinds of designs.
VTT is also studying the printing of inorganic solar panels made from perovskite materials which have been shown to perform around five times better than an OPV and can be ten times as cheap. Decorative solar panels can also be used to harvest indoor light, can be recycled and are both beautiful and cost-effective.
