Charlotte, North Carolina

The first American gold rush began in Charlotte, which made North Carolina the chief US gold producer until more was discovered in the Sierra Nevada’s in 1848. In the 1970’s and 80’s Charlotte’s bank North Caroline National Bank (NCNB) made itself known on a national level while under the control of Hugh McColl. Through his leadership and aggressive acquisitions it eventually became NationsBank. When it merged with BankAmerica it then became Bank of America. Keeping in the tradition of commerce, Charlotte is currently home to 8 Fortune 500 companies (Bank of America, Lowe’s, Mooresville, Nucor, Duke Energy, Sonic Automotive, Family Dollar, SPX Corporation, Domtar) and is the second largest banking center, second to New York. Charlotte also houses the Carolina Panthers of the NFL and the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA. Currently Charlotte is under construction as their uptown area continues to grow with over 20 skyscrapers in the process of being built and more and more small businesses and apartment complexes popping up all over town.
